Week of 9/26/16

Families,

Well, we have made it (almost) to our last week of September! Where has the time gone? While everyone has been transitioning to Fall and October, we have been busy with spelling, retelling stories, writing about our lives, and adding and subtracting numbers!

Reminders:

  • Library books are due on MONDAYS. We also had our first day of computers today…we spent most of the time practicing our username and password.
  • Yesterday we practiced an evacuation drill. Our class did a great job staying quiet and walking to our designated safe spot.
  • New homework went home yesterday! Remember to bring this back the following Thursday.
  • Scholastic book orders are due this Thursday, September 29th! Make sure if you want to place an order you do so online by the end of the school day Thursday. This is a great way to get your child back in the habit of reading and retelling stories. Thank you to everyone who has placed an order so far.
  • Going along with the scholastic orders…please make sure you are reading daily with your child. 1st graders are expected to come in already reading at a level D and we hit the ground running in November.
  • Please continue checking your child’s folder daily and reading their daily news! Your child is excited to share with you a sentence about their day. This needs to be returned to school each day; HOWEVER, once it is all filled out for the week you do not need to bring it in the following Monday. You may keep this at home (or toss it) and your child will get a new daily news on Monday.
  • Turkey Trot forms came home this week. The Turkey Trot is on the 25th this year.
  • The Walk-a-Thon is Friday, October 21st. A blue flyer came home today with more information.

Reading: We have reviewed all of our reading strategies (ex: Flippy the Dolphin) and now are working on using them in our reading! We will also focus on thinking about words in a book, understanding the words in a book, and stopping to think about what we’ve read.

Writing: This week we will continue working on our small moment stories and focus on aspects of writing like stretching out our words and making a list of topics we can write about!

Math: We will be finishing up Unit 1 which focused on partners of a number (ex: 2 + 3 are partners of 5). Our test will be on Wednesday and focus on basic addition and subtraction.

Handwriting/Spelling: We are making our way through our yellow handwriting books and are currently working on perfecting our lowercase letters. Our spelling words this week are “a, to, said.”

We are ready to finish the month of September off STRONG! I’m having such a great time with your child! Let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

Miss Reisdorff
