WEEK OF 3/12/18

Families,

Conferences are a few days away! I am excited to touch base with you about your child’s progress and all of their successes in first grade. We’ve had a busy few months since we last met in November and I can’t wait to show you what we’ve been up to. Take a peek at what’s ahead this month and in the next week:

Important Dates/Reminders:

  • Conferences are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week. Please double check your date and time–our 15 minutes goes fast and I want to be respectful of everyone’s time!
  • Scholastic book orders are due Friday, March 16th by 4p.m. Use the online class code: NNX2P.
  • March is known as Reading Month! A calendar went home with all kinds of special dates to help us celebrate our love of reading. Take a peek at the fun spirit days ahead (many of them give your child the chance to dress up or bring something to school).
  • A note was sent home last week about our version of “Star Student.” There is an attached calendar for your child’s day. There is a chance for your child to have a special person come in and read their favorite book to the class. In order for this special person to come in they MUST have a background check completed. Here is the link to fill one out: Background Check Form
  • A few notes went home this week about our Alward Carnival. One was about ticket sales and the other about our carnival donation basket. Our basket’s theme is “Crayola” so please send in any donations related to Crayola you may have!
  • A reminder that our Spring Break is Friday, March 30th – Sunday, April 8th.

Reading: We are taking a quick break from non-fiction and will be focusing on retelling fiction stories. We will practice retelling with a few different methods–a shape go map, our 5 fingers, and “read, stop, retell.” Comprehension is such an important part of being a successful reader!

Writing: We will try adding humor to our stories (as our author Mo Willems does) and also add feelings, details, and a good ending.

Math: The end of this unit was tricky! Adding big numbers and groups of tens has been a hard concept for many kids so we will spend the beginning of next week reviewing what we’ve learned and then take a test over the material.

Spelling: Our words are but, what, down, all.

Have a good weekend!

Miss Reisdorff
