WEEK OF 2/27/17

Families,

We are finishing up the month of February and starting March already! This will be a busy month for us with all of our reading celebrations, conferences, AND the start of spring break! Here is a look ahead:

Reminders/Dates:

  • Next week is a Dr. Seuss spirit week to kick off “March is Reading Month.” Here is how we will celebrate:            Monday = Crazy Socks (Fox in Sox)                      Tuesday = Stripes/Favorite Hat (Cat in the Hat) Wednesday = Mismatched/Backwards Clothes (Wacky Wednesday)                                                  Thursday = Green Day (Green Eggs and Ham)    Friday = Red/Blue (One Fish, Two Fish)
  • Thursday, March 2nd = For Dr. Seuss’s birthday we are having a special Dr. Seuss reading day during our reading time. Please send in your child with their favorite Dr. Seuss book to read during school!
  • Conferences are scheduled for March 13th, 15th, 16th. A note on Tuesday will be coming home with your conference date and time (same as Fall conferences).
  • Friday, March 10th = Student Early Release Day
  • Friday, March 17th = St. Patrick’s Day
  • Friday, March 24th = Popcorn Friday/Alward Spirit Day
  • Wednesday, March 29th = Scholastic orders due (class code: NNX2P)
  • Friday, March 31st = NO SCHOOL (start of spring break)

Reading: We are focusing on tricky words in our books–looking at word endings we know (Chunky Monkey), working with our partner when we get to a word we don’t know, retell what we’ve read to see if it makes sense.

Writing: We will learn to add a caution statement in our how to writing (ex: “Make sure you let the cookies cool before you touch them), and writing our steps in order using “first, next, then, last.”

Math: We are going to finish up Unit 5 and review at the end of the week with our test at the beginning of next week.

Spelling: This week we are going to complete some Dr. Seuss word activities during this time to celebrate Dr. Seuss week!

Have a great weekend–hoping the weather changes and it will be as nice as last weekend!

WEEK OF 2/20/17

Families,

The month of February is flying by! This week was crazy with all of our celebrations but exciting to think that we have been in school for over 100 days. Here is a look at next week:

Reminders/Dates:

  • Monday, February 20th is President’s Day. We will spend a little bit of our afternoon learning about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln as well as completing some fun president activities.
  • Friday, February 24th is Popcorn Friday/Alward Spirit Day!
  • Scholastic orders are due Tuesday, February 28th.

Reading: We will focus on being a “wide awake reader” and reviewing what we can do if we get distracted and how to get our minds ready for the next page.

Writing: We will write how to make a s’more, snowflake, and how to blow a bubble (with a fun activity to go with it).

Math: We will work on adding three numbers together (ex: 5 + 6 + 3), counting groups of 10, writing numbers 1-120, and adding and subtracting 10’s (ex: 62 + 20).

Handwriting: We will work through some of the remaining pages in our handwriting books.

Have a great weekend! I am looking forward to a great (and hopefully warm) week!

WEEK OF 2/13/17

Families,

Happy Friday! I cannot believe that next week we are already celebrating our 100th day of school! Even though this was a shorter week, we had fun celebrating our persuasive writing and loved getting to learn more about our classmates as we started our “Special Person” days. Here is a look at next week:

Reminders/Dates:

  • Monday, February 13th = 100th Day of School! Please remember to bring in 10 items for our snack mix as well as the “100 collection” that was sent home yesterday.
  • Tuesday, February 14th = Valentine’s Day. Come join us for our Valentine’s Day party from 12-1. Send in your child’s valentines on Monday or Tuesday and please remember to use the class list to make sure there is one for every student.
  • Friday, February 24th is Popcorn Friday/Alward Spirit Day.
  • Tuesday, February 28th = Scholastic Book Orders are due.
  • I will continue my reading level testing next week.

Reading: We are going to focus on reading helpers to make sure we read our fiction and non-fiction texts accurately. We will review our reading buddy strategies (ex: Flippy the Dolphin) and remind ourselves what we can do when we get to tricky words or when we don’t know what they mean.

Writing: We are going to start our new unit on “how to” writing (how to play, do, make, or cook something).

Math: Because our afternoons will be busy celebrating 100’s Day and Valentine’s Day, we will be taking our mid-year assessment on Wednesday and Thursday. This will cover the concepts we have learned so far in 1st grade.

Have a great weekend! I am looking forward to a fun week of celebrations!

WEEK OF 2/6/17

Families,

Enjoy the long weekend ahead! Hopefully it will give everyone time to relax, get healthy, and enjoy the warm weather for those of you who are traveling! Here is a look at next week:

Reminders/Dates:

  • February 6th = NO SCHOOL (enjoy :))
  • February 7th = Our “Special Person” days begin! Please remember to look ahead to the calendar and note that your child can bring in a few pictures, ONE show and tell item, and have a mystery reader stop by to read us their favorite book (if you have not already emailed me with who their guest is, please do so when you know)
  • February 13th = 100th Day of School!
  • February 14th = Valentine’s Day Party from 12-1
  • February 28th = Scholastic orders are due online
  • This week during our Super Switch time I will be retesting reading levels. I will be updating these in your child’s yellow take home folder
  • Hopefully you saw the email I sent out Friday, but incase that did not get to you, just a reminder that our classroom sink and drinking fountain are out of commission for the rest of the year. Please send your child with a water bottle for quick drinks throughout the day.

Reading:  We are focusing on retelling important facts from our non-fiction texts using different visuals. One includes a way to retell using our hand and there is also a worksheet we can use to record what we have learned.

Writing: We are finishing up our unit on persuasive writing and will have our writing “test” on Tuesday and Wednesday and then our writer’s celebration on Thursday. Keep an eye out for your child’s writing coming home on Thursday.

Math: We are working on teen numbers and strategies to find unknown partners (ex: 8+ __ = 14  OR 13-7 = ).

Social Studies: We are taking a break from spelling and handwriting to focus on maps! We will learn how to draw maps, directions, and how land is green and water is blue. Friday afternoon we will continue our learning with some map rotations between the 1st grade rooms.

Have a great week!
