WEEK OF 1/30/17

Families,

Thank you for being patient as I was in and out this week. I am finally feeling better and am hoping a restful weekend will help me beat this once and for all! Here is a look at what is coming next week:

Reminders/Dates:

  • Scholastic orders are due Tuesday, January 31st
  • Friday, February 3rd is a half day–students will be dismissed at 12:15
  • Monday, February 6th = NO SCHOOL
  • Our Valentine’s Day party is on Tuesday, February 14th from 12-1. Keep an eye out for more information!
  • Please double check the “Special Person” calendar to make sure you are in town the day your child is assigned. Also, if you could email me who their special guest reader is as soon as you know that would be wonderful. I am excited to start this in 2 weeks!

Reading: We are still working on non-fiction and will focus on asking questions based on the text, retelling facts, and making connections.

Writing: We are still working on persuasive writing and will review using words like “and” and “because” and making sure we write down good reasons that support our opinion.

Math: We will review Monday and take our Unit 4 test on Tuesday! We will begin Unit 5 and focus on unknown partners with teen totals and subtraction with teen numbers.

Spelling: Our words this week are: be, this, from, make.

Have a great (and healthy) weekend!

WEEK OF 1/23/17

Families,

The weather finally cooperated and we were able to spend these last two days outside for recess! Here’s what is coming up next week:

Reminders/Dates:

  • Popcorn Friday/Spirit Day is on Friday, January 27th.
  • Scholastic book orders are due Tuesday, January 31st.
  • Please note the “Special Person” information and calendars that were sent home this week. If you have an issue with the date your child is listed on, please send me an email.
  • Although the snow is melting, please keep in mind that our playground is still very wet. Please continue to send your child to school with appropriate apparel/accessories.

Reading: We are still working on non-fiction reading. A heavy focus for next week is to work on identifying and writing new facts we learn.

Writing: We are still working on persuasive writing and how to put our opinion in letter form. We will focus on our audience, adding words like “and” and “because,” and making sure we are able to state WHY we want something.

Math: We are wrapping up unit 4 and will focus on adding numbers to 2 digit numbers (ex: 48 + 5). We will review on Thursday  and have our test the following week.

Spelling: We will be finishing up this unit and will have a spelling test and sentence dictation. We will also take a quick break and start learning to write and say our home address (feel free to start practicing this at home!).

Enjoy the warm weekend!

WEEK OF 1/16/17

Families,

Well, we still have yet to have our first full week back from break! I hope you enjoyed the surprise “ice day.” Here is a look at what we are doing next week:

Dates/Reminders:

  • Popcorn Friday/Spirit Day is Friday, January 27th
  • Scholastic orders are due Tuesday, January 31st

Reading: We are reviewing our reading strategies (Eagle Eye, Flippy the Dolphin, Skippy the Frog, etc.) and learning how to use these in non-fiction books. Typically, non-fiction books are harder and have more unfamiliar words, so this will be great practice to help us when we get to tricky parts.

Writing: We are working on writing letters and will focus on how to write a persuasive letter to someone. We will also learn how to organize our persuasive writing so it makes sense to our reader.

Math: We are still working on strategies for ten groups and how to build double digit numbers.

Spelling: Our words this week are his, they, at, with.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Reisdorff

WEEK OF 1/9/16

Families,

What a GREAT (and chilly) week back! The new year is off to a great start with this class. Here is a look at the week ahead:

Reminders/Dates:

  • Early Release Day is Friday, January 13th. Dismissal is at 12:15.
  • Popcorn Friday/Spirit Day is on Friday, January 27th.
  • Scholastic Book Orders are due Tuesday, January 31st (remember to please order online with the class code: NNX2P).
  • This week was too cold to go outside for recess; however, please still send your child with the appropriate winter apparel just incase! Not to mention we still have to walk out in the cold to get home :).

Reading: We will review the text features we learned (ex: table of contents, captions, labels) and focus on the main idea of our non-fiction books.

Writing: We are starting our new unit of persuasive writing. We will start by learning how to write a persuasive letter to someone about a pet we might want to have.

Math: We are working with ten groups and how to group them, add them, and creating numbers with ten groups and extra ones (ex: 46 is 4 groups of 10 and 6 extra ones).

*We have been playing lots of fun games with this unit. An easy way to quiz your child at home or in the car is to say, “What is 5 groups of 10 and 2 extra ones?” and your child would say, “52.”

Spelling: Our words for this week are: as, come, his, with.

Stay warm this weekend!

Writing: We will finish up our poetry unit and practice writing acrostic, color, shape, “I like,” and “-ing” poems.

Math: We will continue working with teen numbers and addition strategies to solve for them.
