WEEK OF 12/12/16

Families,

Before we take a look at next week, here are some important dates/reminders:

  • Scholastic orders are due MONDAY, December 12th!
  • You can start bringing in gifts for our class gift exchange on Monday, December 12th. You can continue to bring them throughout next week!
  • Our last day of school is Wednesday, December 21st.
  • Our holiday party will be on Wednesday, December 21st from 12 -1. Thank you to our parents who are volunteering–ALL parents are welcome to join us and celebrate the winter fun!

Reading: We will spend time reviewing how to retell a story and the story characters (how their feelings change, if we agree/disagree with their actions, if they learn a lesson).

Writing: We have finished learning different types of poems, so next week we will have a “free write” where we can practice writing whatever type of poem we would like (acrostic, color, shape, “-ing,” “I like”).

Math: Our focus will be on teen numbers (a group of 10 and extra ones). We will look at making teen numbers as well as teen addition strategies.

Spelling: We will take a break from our traditional spelling words and instead do word work activities revolving around winter/the holidays.

Stay warm and safe this weekend! Looking forward to another GREAT week with your child!

WEEK OF 12/5/16

Families,

Happy December! This month will be very busy but I have a feeling it will go by quickly since we are only together until the 21st. Here are some important reminders/dates:

  • Scholastic Book Orders are due by Monday, December 12th to be sure they make it to you before we leave for break! Remember that if you would like your order to be a surprise, please let me know ahead of time so we can arrange a time to get you your order.
  • A green packet came home with information regarding the Holiday Program. It is on Tuesday, December 6th at 6:30p.m. Please have your child there no later than 6:15.
  • Our class will be attending Santa’s Secret Shop on Thursday, December 8th at 9:00. Gifts range from $.50-$5 so please plan accordingly if you wish to have your child participate.
  • Keep bringing in your decorated ornaments! Similar to our turkey feathers, be creative and feel free to decorate WITH your child. As they come in they will be added to our tree.
  • If you signed up to volunteer at our holiday party, information was sent home to you this week. The party will be on Wednesday, December 21st. Once we have solidified a time, I will let you know.
  • The weather is starting to get colder but we are still going outside for lunch recess and end of the day recess. PLEASE send your child with appropriate clothing (and practice zipping coats!).

Reading: We are still focusing on the characters in our story and will focus on how they are feeling and how we can match our voices to reflect that when we read aloud.

Writing: We will continue working on poetry and will learn how to write “-ing” and “I like…” poems.

*We will only have 2 days of reading and writing due to our holiday program rehearsals.

Math: We will be taking our math test on Tuesday and starting Unit 4 on Wednesday. The  beginning of unit 4 will include groups of 10 and teen numbers.

Spelling: We will be doing a review of spelling words and completing a sentence dictation and spelling test.

Have a good weekend–stay warm!
