WEEK OF 11/28

Families,

Just when I thought time couldn’t go any faster, I looked at the calendar and it will be December next week! Here is a look at our week after Thanksgiving!

Reminders:

  • A special “thank you” to everyone who was able to donate to our can drive! As a school we surpassed our goal and were able to raise 4,226 items! A free coupon for bowling at Hudsonville Lanes is coming home with your child today :).
  • Friday, December 2nd is a student early release day. School will be dismissed at 12:15.
  • The Alward Holiday Program is on Tuesday, December 6th at 6:30 p.m.
  • Now that the weather is getting colder, please make sure your child brings the appropriate winter wear–we are still going outside for lunch and end of the day recess!

Reading: We are still focusing on the characters in our story. This week we will look at the pictures to see how our character is feeling, reread to get to know our character, determine how a character’s feelings change throughout a story, and agreeing or disagreeing with our character’s actions.

Writing: We are all done with small moment stories and starting poetry! We will take a look at different types of poems and try writing our own! We will think of things we could write about and write acrostic, color, and shape poems.

Math: We will finish up Unit 3 of math. This has been a tricky one where we focus on subtraction strategies and using circle drawings, math mountains, and equations to help us solve for the answer.

Spelling: We are back to spelling and will work on the words: are, on, three, was.

I hope you all enjoy the holiday break and are able to spend some special and relaxing time with family. For anyone who is heading out of town, I hope you have safe travels! I am extremely thankful for the amazing kids and families I get to work with each day. THANK YOU for all you do for your child and for sharing them with me :).

Happy Thanksgiving,

Miss Reisdorff

(SHORT) WEEK OF 11/21/16

Families,

Next week we are only in school for 2 days! While it is a short week, our days will be packed with fun Thanksgiving activities. We will not be learning from our regular curriculum but instead will be doing reading, writing, math, and social studies activities revolving around the upcoming holiday.

Reminders:

  • Monday, November 21st is the LAST DAY FOR THE FOOD DRIVE. Ms. Stokes has reported that it is a close competition so please keep donating boxed and canned goods! The top 2 teams get to go bowling with Ms. Stokes! Lucky!
  • NO SCHOOL November 23rd-25th (Thanksgiving Break)

WEEK OF 11/14/16

What a busy week it has been! Between conferences, the book fair, spending some time to learn about the voting process, and our regular routine, we have been learning non-stop!

A quick “thank you” to everyone who was able to donate to our school change wars. Here are some reminders as we head into next week:

  • Keep bringing in food for the food drive! While we do have another week for it to take place (until the 21st), we are still working towards our Alward goal and helping others.
  • Keep reading 20 minutes a day to fill up your Pizza Hut Book-It Calendar. Not only does your child receive a free pizza but it also helps them become a better reader! It’s a win-win :)!
  • Friday, November 18th is Popcorn Friday!
  • NO SCHOOL November 23rd-25th (Thanksgiving Break)

Reading: Our focus will be on story characters. We will look at what the characters do, how the characters change throughout a story, character traits, and how retelling a story helps us get to know the characters.

Writing: We are finishing up our small moment stories unit! We will review 5 star sentences, adding detail, and then spend a day “publishing” our writing to make sure it is perfect and ending the week with a writer’s celebration! Be on the look out for your child’s amazing writing coming home.

Math: We will continue working through Unit 3 and finding the unknown partners of a number and working on subtraction strategies.

Handwriting: We are taking a break from spelling to work on handwriting. We want to continue practicing our perfect pencil grip and forming our letters the correct way.

Have a great weekend,

Miss Reisdorff

WEEK OF 11/7/16

Families,

Happy (almost) Conference Week! Here is a look at the week ahead:

Reminders:

  • Keep bringing in your turkey feathers! Our turkey is looking a little bare and it is a fun, quick, and easy activity to do as a family!
  • Our PE Cares Food Drive has begun! Please send in any food with your child to place in their “team” bin now until the 21st of November. The top 2 teams get to go bowling with Ms. Stokes!
  • Conferences are the 7th, 9th, and 10th. Please double check your date and time–I look forward to meeting with you and hope to meet with ALL families.
  • Our school book fair starts on Monday, the 7th. We will be previewing the book fair on the 7th and having a “shopping” time on Wednesday, the 9th (please send in money with your child on the 9th if there is a book you wish to purchase).
  • Popcorn Friday is on Friday, November 18th.

Reading: We will spend the week working on fluency. This means we want to make sure we read at the right speed, use a smooth voice and phrasing, read with punctuation (slight pause between sentences), and read with expression.

Writing: We are reviewing detail, writing multiple sentences on a page, and good beginnings and endings (I know this might seem repetitive but these are the mechanics first graders really need to know! We want to not only practice them and know how to do them but MASTER them).

Math: We are starting Unit 3 where we will focus on unknown partners and how to solve for them (ex: 5 + __ = 9).

Spelling: Are spelling words for the week are he, for, was, play.

Social Studies: Friday, November 11th we will be learning about Veteran’s Day and working on some special activities to help us understand this day better.

Enjoy the half day and have a great weekend!
