Apple Activities

We spent our afternoon completing an apple graph, an apple book, and making our very own tissue paper apples! We learned so many new things like: the inside of an apple is called the flesh, before they become apples they are blossoms, and are still curious to learn if apples have ages, how long they are, and why they are different colors. Make sure to ask your child what they learned about an apple today! Here are some pictures to share of our fun!

Week of 9/26/16

Families,

Well, we have made it (almost) to our last week of September! Where has the time gone? While everyone has been transitioning to Fall and October, we have been busy with spelling, retelling stories, writing about our lives, and adding and subtracting numbers!

Reminders:

  • Library books are due on MONDAYS. We also had our first day of computers today…we spent most of the time practicing our username and password.
  • Yesterday we practiced an evacuation drill. Our class did a great job staying quiet and walking to our designated safe spot.
  • New homework went home yesterday! Remember to bring this back the following Thursday.
  • Scholastic book orders are due this Thursday, September 29th! Make sure if you want to place an order you do so online by the end of the school day Thursday. This is a great way to get your child back in the habit of reading and retelling stories. Thank you to everyone who has placed an order so far.
  • Going along with the scholastic orders…please make sure you are reading daily with your child. 1st graders are expected to come in already reading at a level D and we hit the ground running in November.
  • Please continue checking your child’s folder daily and reading their daily news! Your child is excited to share with you a sentence about their day. This needs to be returned to school each day; HOWEVER, once it is all filled out for the week you do not need to bring it in the following Monday. You may keep this at home (or toss it) and your child will get a new daily news on Monday.
  • Turkey Trot forms came home this week. The Turkey Trot is on the 25th this year.
  • The Walk-a-Thon is Friday, October 21st. A blue flyer came home today with more information.

Reading: We have reviewed all of our reading strategies (ex: Flippy the Dolphin) and now are working on using them in our reading! We will also focus on thinking about words in a book, understanding the words in a book, and stopping to think about what we’ve read.

Writing: This week we will continue working on our small moment stories and focus on aspects of writing like stretching out our words and making a list of topics we can write about!

Math: We will be finishing up Unit 1 which focused on partners of a number (ex: 2 + 3 are partners of 5). Our test will be on Wednesday and focus on basic addition and subtraction.

Handwriting/Spelling: We are making our way through our yellow handwriting books and are currently working on perfecting our lowercase letters. Our spelling words this week are “a, to, said.”

We are ready to finish the month of September off STRONG! I’m having such a great time with your child! Let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

Week of 9/19

I am looking forward to our first full week of school! The kiddos and I have been keeping track of how many days we have been together and I still can’t believe we’ve been in school for 9 days. We have been having fun learning our reading strategies, completing our fun packs, earning table points, and picking our own leveled books.

Reminders:

  1. Scholastic book orders are due Thursday, September 29th. If you choose to place an order, you must complete the order online (class code is written at the top of the packet).
  2. Our first page of homework came home yesterday! Homework is sent home every Thursday and must be returned by the following Thursday.
  3. Hopefully we will see the next few days cool down a bit, but please send your child with a water bottle incase. Our rooms get so hot and their bodies are so busy that it is important for them to stay hydrated so they can focus on their learning and feel more comfortable.
  4. Library books are due MONDAY. We will be going to the library on Mondays and the computer lab on Fridays.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING REGARDING OUR SPECIALS SCHEDULE:

On half days, we will be having a 25 minute block for specials. This means that today we had music for 25 minutes and that Monday will be ART. Our specials calendar is now backed up a day so please move all of the specials forward on your calendar and in your mind :).

This Week:

Reading: We will continue focusing on our reading strategies (ex: lips the fish) and what reader’s workshop looks like. We will also learn about reading stamina, the steps to reread a story, how to stay focused on our reading, and how to make a movie in our mind of what we read.

Writing: We will continue to “think, draw, write,” as well as build our reading stamina, plan our writing before we begin, and the 3 W’s (where, who, what).

Math: We are continuing to learn about the partners of a number. We will use our math journals and manipulatives to help us learn the partners of 7-10.

Spelling/Handwriting: We will work on spelling the words: the, and, my, of. We will also keep working in our handwriting books to master writing uppercase and lowercase letters using a perfect pencil grip :).

Please email, call, or send in a note with any questions, comments, or concerns! I am having a blast with your first grader and look forward to what the rest of the month of September has in store for us!

Week of 9/12

Families,

WOW! What an awesome first week. We spent lots of time getting to know each other and learning our class routines. If the rest of this year is anything like this past week we are in for a GREAT year. I feel so blessed to have each kiddo in my room.

Reminders:

  1. Scholastic book orders come home today. Please only order online if you choose to get books. Our class code is written at the top, but it is: NNX2P. Please submit your order no later than Thursday, September 29th.
  2. Next week I will begin some of my literacy testing. This can be a lengthy process, so it may take a while for me to gather all of my data. You will notice starting Monday that your child will have a reading level chart on the inside of their folder. Every time your child moves up a level, I will mark where that is so you always know where your child is and can keep track of their progress. I think this will be very helpful for us as we try to help your child become the successful reader I know they can be!
  3. Keep sending in those family pictures! We have LOVED learning about and seeing our classroom families and it is so fun to have those posted in our room (REMINDER: these will stay in our room until December, so please make sure it is a picture you can do without for a few months).
  4. A flyer regarding school pictures came home yesterday. I do not know our time yet, but pictures are on Wednesday, September 14th.
  5. Please continue talking to your child about their day/daily news. I have heard such wonderful feedback from so many of you saying your child is already implementing phrases/games they’ve learned into their daily life. The support from families means so much to them.

Curriculum:

  1. Reading: We will begin Reader’s Workshop! We will start with the basics of what reading time looks and sounds like, the 3 ways to read a book, and building our reading stamina.
  2. Writing: We will start out our week with a writing “test” so I can see where your child is at. They will write me a story to show me all of the things they know good writers can do! We will then review the basics of the writing process where we “think, draw, and write.”
  3. Math: We will begin using our math journals as we review concepts such as #1-10, partners of a number (ex: 1 and 4 are partners of 5), and basic addition.
  4. Handwriting: We are working on letter formation and pencil grip review! So far our class seems to be doing a great job with doing our best and careful work when it comes to writing our letters.

If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please email me at: rreisdo@hpseagles.net. I cannot wait to be back together on Monday for our 2nd week!
